LET’S BE COPS

2.5 stars (out of 5)

Desperately average and casually wrong, co-writer/producer/director Luke Greenfield’s ludicrous laffer is packed tight with LA stand-up comics who improvise like crazy and threaten to make the material funny. But it isn’t really, Officer.

A pair of dodos named Ryan (Jake Johnson from TV’s New Girl) and Justin (Damon Wayans Jr, also New Girl-ish) are feeling 30ish and hopeless, as the former is a failed footballer and the latter has missed his chance to create a cool new computer game. Misunderstanding an invitation to a reunion party and turning up dressed in the phony cop get-ups left over from Justin’s failed presentation to his dickhead boss Todd (Jonathan Lajoie), they discover that there are definite perks to being policemen, and damn potential prison sentences. Fighting overage sorority girls, smoking high-grade weed and impressing chicks like Josie (Nina Dobrev), who has a crush on Justin for some reason, the pair also use their fake powers to hassle a carload of Eurotrash nasties who don’t take kindly to being pushed around. The result? Scary baddie boss Mossi (James D’Arcy) gets upset, a real cop (Rob Riggle) winds up sniffing about and the guys learn a few lame life lessons, including the revelation that crystal meth is pretty cool.

Too dopey to be as naughty or amoral as it might have been, this cheesy silliness is just crying out for some severe police brutality.
